Two weeks ago, the National Park Wonders team hiked to the top of the most dangerous hike in America, Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park. Angel’s Landing is 4.4 mile out and back hike, with an elevation gain of 1600 feet. It is perhaps the most infamous hike in the United States, and for good reason. As of 2022, at least 20 people have fallen to their death while trying to reach the peak.
As we sat in the shuttle, ready to begin the hike, a sense of excitement and dread was in the air. It was our first time hiking Angel’s Landing, and we weren’t sure what to expect. Although we had hiked other difficult mountains, such as Guadeloupe Peak (the highest point in Texas), our experience seemed inadequate compared to the world famous, intimidating Zion hike. With permits in hand, we anxiously braved the upward trek.
The first few miles were switchbacks, straight uphill. Dozens of people congregated in the few shady spots to regain their breath and take sips of water. After the few brutal miles uphill, we finally came to Scout’s Lookout. We were surprised to find over 50 people at the landing – tour groups, couples, and solo travelers alike – eating lunch, taking photos, and marveling at the grandeur of the scenery. The most surprising part is the bathrooms they were able to install at the lookout. The waste has to be carried out by helicopter every few days!
Most people turn around at Scout’s Lookout. We continued on the 0.5 mile trek to Angel’s Landing. Here is the view we were greeted with. A little scary, right?
There is a lot of fear mongering that surrounds Angel’s Landing. Some people say it’s absolutely terrifying, some say it’s easy, and some say it’s so horrific they couldn’t even finish it.
Do you want to hike Angel’s Landing, but aren’t sure if you can do it? Let me ask you three questions.
- Are you really passionate about this?
- Are you in reasonably good shape?
- Are you scared of heights?
You don’t have to be a super-athlete or expert hiker to complete this trail. We saw people of all shapes, sizes, and ages get to the top of Angel’s Landing with no issue. We even saw children as young as 7 years old. If you can manage several hours of hiking and some rock scrambling, you will be able to finish. Similarly, your mental state will play a large role in your ability to complete it. If you aren’t passionate about it, or you’re deathly afraid of heights, you will have a hard time finishing.
Yes, it’s a hard hike. But imagine how you’ll feel when you get to the top, and see views like this:
And take photos of yourself like this:
You can do it! Just remember to get a permit first.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s the most honest and direct thing I have read about the hike. I think I will do it!
